Food information & allergens
For prepacked food in Great Britain, the final label needs to be built from the approved product specification. Core information can include the name of the food, ingredients where required, emphasised allergens, net quantity, date marking, lot identification, storage conditions, instructions for use where necessary, responsible business name and postal address, origin information where required, and nutrition information where the rules require it. Recipe-mix pages on this website do not replace the legal pack declaration.
How we apply this
The regulated allergen list includes celery, cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, nuts, peanuts, sesame, soya and sulphur dioxide/sulphites above the legal threshold. The relevant allergens must be emphasised in the ingredients list when they are ingredients. Mustard seed, celery seed and sesame therefore receive special attention in a spice range. For blends, the only safe approach is to review the final formula and each ingredient specification.
What must be verified
Distance selling has an additional practical point: where food is offered for sale online, required allergen information must be available before purchase and again on delivery. This site is currently structured as an enquiry catalogue rather than a checkout store. If ecommerce is added, the product data model should be expanded so mandatory food information, pricing, delivery terms and consumer-contract information are presented at the correct stage of the transaction.
